Core Research Pillar

Local LLMs & AI Security

Securing sovereign artificial intelligence: from air-gapped model inference and weight integrity to prompt injection sandboxing and confidential computing.

As organizations and engineers transition from centralized proprietary APIs to privately hosted open-weight models (e.g. Llama, Mistral, DeepSeek, Qwen), the security perimeter shifts dramatically. Running Large Language Models locally mitigates external data exfiltration to third-party providers, but introduces a novel attack surface spanning system-level exploits, model weight manipulation, and adversarial reasoning.

The Local AI Threat Vectors

Operating inference engines (such as llama.cpp, vLLM, or Ollama) directly on bare-metal or local clusters requires addressing several core threat vectors:

  • Model Supply Chain & Weight Poisoning: Untrusted checkpoints, pickle files, or tampered GGUF / Safetensors formats can carry embedded code execution payloads or dormant trigger backdoors that activate under specific input conditions.
  • Indirect Prompt Injection & Tool Compromise: When local LLMs are granted access to shell commands, databases, local file trees, or APIs (such as via Model Context Protocol / MCP), malicious web scrapings or documents can hijack the execution context and manipulate the host system.
  • Memory Remanence & Context Leaks: Model weights and KV caches residing in unified memory (Apple Silicon) or discrete VRAM are subject to cold-boot extraction, side-channel timing analysis, or multi-tenant leakage without strict memory zeroing.
  • Adversarial Jailbreaks & Denial of Service: Unbounded context length attacks, algorithmic algorithmic resource exhaustion, and adversarial suffix attacks can trigger GPU memory overflows (OOM) or circumvent safety alignment locally.

Engineering Defense-in-Depth

At Udero, we advocate for strict defense-in-depth principles when orchestrating local LLM pipelines:

Air-Gapped Isolation

Running inference daemons in dedicated network namespaces, disabling external WAN access, and using firewalled local sockets.

Cryptographic Weight Attestation

Verifying SHA-256 hashes and cryptographic signatures against reproducible upstream releases prior to loading into hardware memory.

Least-Privilege Agent Sandboxing

Restricting tool-calling agents via seccomp filters, AppArmor profiles, and ephemeral container workspaces with zero access to production secrets.

Deterministic Guardrails

Deploying regex and semantic input/output filters at the proxy boundary to detect malicious injection payloads before model ingestion.

Continuous Security Analysis

Udero regularly publishes technical breakdowns, vulnerability disclosures, and practical implementation blueprints on self-hosted AI architecture, hardware-accelerated privacy, and adversarial resilience.
